One of the powerful blessings of the Songbook and Prayerbook of the Old Testament — sometimes called the Psalter — is that it gives us words to speak to God for all seasons of our lives. We will call the Psalms, our HeartBook.

If the book of Job teaches us anything, it’s that God would prefer to hear from us even when our hearts are out of tune than to not hear from us at all. Our HeartBook gives us words, tried and proven words, inspired and God-approved words, to share the deepest longings, heartbroken cries, primal ragings, insecure questionings, and loneliest chasms of grief.Rather than a detailed introduction to the Psalms, simply thumb through the collection of these heart cries and get a taste, a prayer-bathed random taste of God’s nearness for every moment of life’s journey.

Notice the honest language, the physical postures, the openness to human fragility and the dogged and determined faith that calls our hearts back to God. Get ready for the journey. Commit to sink your heart into the Psalms. But for now, trust that a preview has given you a God-view of what can forever change your walk of faith.
