Real Prayer

with 7 comments

Lots of talk these days about the Kingdom of God. To be honest, I’m really glad. What’s got me thinking on it tonight (and this morning as night turns into morning) is the congregational challenge to follow several spiritual practices each day. One of these is saying the Lord’s prayer each day:

Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen (Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV).
Talk about a tough, God-centered prayer, think about these words again:
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Jesus meant these words! Know how I know — more than just the fact Jesus said them? Remember what he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane as he faced his own death?
My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done (Matthew 26:42).

This prayer, coming when it does —  right up against Judas betrayal of Jesus, Peter’s denial of Jesus, the other 10 apostles forsaking Jesus and hiding, and the awful ridicule, scorn, mockery, and physical beating Jesus was about to endure — reminds that Jesus didn’t just pray the “Lord’s Prayer,” but he also lived it and died it with clear intention and purpose and courage.

So as we pray the Lord’s prayer, let’s remember that this is a prayer that Jesus not only taught, but that he also lived and died to pray.

  7. Phil: On January 19, 2012, My Wife of 60 YEARS of MARRIAGE went home to see the father. Would you undrestand that it has been Five months to this day and I still shed tears of loneliness, AND JOY to know she is with The Father! Thanks in advance for the prayers I know you will say, you are one GREAT guy!

My new website begins , hopefully, next week. The Evil One saw his opening and took advantage.

YES – I HAVE SAID THE LORDS PRAYER SINCE I WAS A CHILD TO 79 YEARS OLD, EACH NIGHT! What a comfort that has been, even thought I made Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine corps, Korea in 1951 and 1954.

THANKS for bringing it up. Been a sinner, done things I should not have, but HIS Prayer has brought me through! SEMPER FI!
