Happy Birthday Coach!

with 3 comments

Today is John Wooden’s 99th birthday. Nicknamed “The Wizard of Westwood,” Coach Wooden is the greatest basketball coach of all time. Revered by his players and respected by all who know him, this man of deep faith and conviction is an ongoing example that good guys can win, influence, and change the lives of those in whom they invest their lives.

Famous for his character pyramid, a philosophy of life deeply influenced by his faith that he taught to all of his players, Coach Wooden helped fashion champions who still say that they learned more about life than they did about basketball.

Three of the key sayings that I remember associated with Coach Wooden are these:

Be quick, but don’t hurry.

Happiness begins where selfishness ends.

Dare to be Daniel,
Dare to stand alone.
Dare to have a purpose firm,
Dare to make it known.

For more on Coach Wooden’s teaching philosophy, check out his website.

Here are his 7 core principles of life:

  • Be true to yourself.
  • Make each day your masterpiece.
  • Help others.
  • Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
  • Make friendship a fine art.
  • Build a shelter against a rainy day.
  • Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.

Thanks coach!
